Hirschsprung Disease
Hirchsprung’s disease is an abnormality in which certain nerve fibers are absent in segments of the bowel. This disease is caused by certain nerve cells in the large intestine that didn’t develop before birth. Without the nerves, the affected colon lacks the ability to move bowel contents. This disease can affect varying lengths of the bowel segment.

I have a son and a husband that had Hirchsprung’s disease as babies. When they did the surgery for my son, they told us about the immediate dangers and side affects. I was not informed that my son could have bowel problem for the rest of his life. He is now 7 years old and has severe constipation problems and the doctors ar egiving him Miralax. I can not find any studies on the affects of long term uses and I do not want my child dependant on a drug to make him have BM. What I would like to know is if there is anything else I can do?
