Acid maltase deficiency also known as Pompe disease, is a rare genetic disorder caused by an enzyme deficiency that affects the break down of glycogen in the body. Glycogen is the chemical substance used by muscles to store sugar and starch. Individuals with this disorder have glycogen build up in the muscles of the body and can lead to severe muscle degradation over time.
