Congenital adrenal hyperplasia also called CAH is a group of autosomal recessive disorders caused by gene mutations for enzymes. These mutations cause numerous deficiencies, 21-hydroxylase deficiency is the most common. Many of these conditions are associated with excessive or deficient production of sex steroids and can alter the development of sex characteristics in some affected infants, children, and adults. Individuals with this disorder may have symptoms such as: hypertension, excessive facial hair, early pubic hair in childhood, irregular menstrual cycles during adolescence, absent or delayed puberty, and vomiting due to salt-wasting leading to dehydration and/or death.
