An acoustic neuroma, also known as neurolemmoma or vestibular schwannoma, is a non-canerous (benign) tumor that grows on the eighth cranial nerve affecting balance or hearing. Acoustic neuromas can occur spontaneously or through Neurofibromatosis type 2, a rare genetic disorder. The most common symptom for individuals with this condition is hearing loss in the tumor ear. If left untreated, the tumor will continue to grow over time and can lead to severe neurological problems, and possibly death. Treatments are available through removal surgery or radiation.
